Romcom Pattern of Month C
Month C, Day ○
The temperature has been steadily rising, and it’s getting quite hot. In the classroom, I can hear voices longing for the summer uniforms or talking about how much they’re looking forward to summer vacation. Sasaki has joined the group of boys, passionately discussing the merits of the girls’ summer uniforms.
Specifically, he’s talking about how great it is when their white shirts stick to them from sweat, the way they wipe away perspiration, or the “see-through bra” look. It’s not that I can’t sympathize, but because he’s shouting it at the top of his lungs, the girls are giving him incredibly cold stares. He’s playing the “best friend character” trope a bit too perfectly. Keep it up and keep making things more rom-com-like. Though, you probably won’t be popular unless some kind of special event happens.
By the way, the midterm results came back. The classroom was in an uproar over them. Sasaki was rejoicing with all his might that he didn’t have any failing grades, while Takashiro and Shironami naturally scored in the 90s across the board. Sakakibara had nearly 100 on everything. Aside from Sasaki, this is one seriously high-spec group. As for me, perhaps because we’ve been having regular study sessions since the first one, I managed to get pretty good grades. I saw a few 90s peeking through, and the rest were around the 70s.
While the classroom was wrapped in a mix of heat and chill from those conversations, our homeroom teacher, Aoyagi-sensei, walked in. It was time for the afternoon homeroom. After some trivial announcements, there was a notice that sent the classroom’s tension soaring: the announcement of the Sports Festival.
Being such a quintessential high school event, our “Sakakibara Harem Corps (?)” was also full of energy. Takashiro and Shironami were fired up to show Sakakibara their best sides, and Sasaki, apparently confident in his athleticism, was saying things like, “My era has finally arrived…” Sakakibara and Umihara, whom Sasaki is devoted to, were just looking forward to it normally.
As for me, I’m also looking forward to it. A Sports Festival is a treasure trove of rom-com tropes. Unlike last month’s freshman orientation, the entire school is split into Red and White teams to battle it out. It’s a standard system, which means there’s a high probability of seeing a standard rom-com play out. Various events, students clashing with students, and Sakakibara tripping flags left and right… this is truly youth.
This is a chance. I’ll close the distance between Sakakibara and Umihara, the “faint-flag” Student Council President, the tsundere fujoshi (?) Vice President, and any yet-to-be-seen heroines all at once, accelerating this rom-com. Just you wait, Sakakibara. I’m going to observe your rom-com life—and your flustered self—from every possible angle.
It seems that as the Sports Festival approaches, practice periods will be taken during class hours. Since I don’t get much of a chance to see other classes, I’ll use this as an opportunity to find a new heroine candidate. Since we already have the “Orthodox,” “Mixed,” “Yandere,” “Tsundere,” “Cool,” and “Little Devil” types… maybe a “Literary Girl” heroine next? If she’s not good at sports, she might actually be easier to find. I must tighten my resolve and make sure not to miss even the slightest rom-com development.

Month C, Day △
Today marks the start of the Sports Festival practice period, one week before the actual event. Specifically, the entire afternoon curriculum becomes practice for the events. I worry about whether this school’s educational curriculum is actually okay, but that’s not for me to care about. The team assignments were announced previously, and they are as follows:
- Red Team: Sakakibara, Umihara, Sasaki, Me
- White Team: Takashiro, Shironami, Student Council President, Vice President
Those are the members of the “Sakakibara Harem” that I’m aware of. The “Twin Castles” (Takashiro and Shironami) were furious about being on a different team than Sakakibara, but there’s no helping what’s been decided. Being on the same team as Sakakibara is a huge win. I’ll use this chance to accelerate the rom-com.
To do that, I need to shorten the distance between the fellow Red Team members Umihara and Sakakibara, and find a new heroine candidate. I figured it would be easier to find her within the Red Team since we practice together, so during today’s practice, I focused all my attention on observing the people on the Red Team. As a result, Umihara got mad at me, which I’ll just count as a “charming mistake.” She scolded me to “just practice normally.” Incomprehensible.
Despite being scolded, I kept observing and found someone who fit my “Literary Heroine” ideal perfectly. During relay practice, that girl was sending passionate glances toward Sakakibara while blushing. She wore glasses, had black hair slightly covering her eyes, and a “cute-type” face. She was a perfect specimen.
After checking the Red Team roster and doing some “eavesdropping” data collection, I found out the literary girl’s name is Amagiri Sumire. She’s a first-year like me. I felt like her name sounded very “literary girl-ish.” I found out later that she is indeed in the Literature Club.
To advance the development of this new heroine, I intentionally called Sakakibara over loudly when Amagiri was nearby to physically close the distance between them. Sakakibara was surprised by my sudden loud voice. “I didn’t know you could yell that loud…” he said. How rude—I can yell when I want to. Though I have no memory of doing so in the past year.
As soon as she saw Sakakibara running over in confusion, Amagiri shyly covered her face with her hands and hid behind a shadow. However, it looked like she was watching us, so during my trivial conversation with Sakakibara, I steered the flow toward, “Girls like that are pretty nice, aren’t they?” I felt a bit disgusted with myself for using a tactic similar to Sasaki’s, but it was all to ensure the flags were set. A necessary sacrifice.
And then, a stroke of luck. I got a statement from Sakakibara: “It’s nice to have someone you can talk to about shared hobbies.” And I knew for a fact that Sakakibara enjoys literature to a normal degree.
Certain of victory, I kept an eye on Amagiri nearby while “proselytizing” to Sakakibara about how charming literary girls are. I felt Sakakibara was a bit creeped out, but if the concept of a “literary girl” remains in his heart even a little, this operation was a success.
Amagiri’s reaction was excellent; she was looking this way with eyes full of hope. Now, I just need to bring the two of them together naturally. Tomorrow, there happens to be practice for a mysterious event called “Co-ed Three-Legged Race.” I’ll gauge the timing and make sure Sakakibara and Amagiri are paired up. (I won’t interfere with whether it actually bears fruit), but I’ll do my best to support what seems to be Amagiri’s first love. Well, mostly for my own enjoyment, though.
