Romcom Pattern of Month D
D-Month, Day ○
Another day, another shift spent putting my heart and soul into rom-com observation. Today, during homeroom, a major event was announced. Yes, the notice about summer vacation. Starting this month, we’re diving headfirst into the summer holidays.
Summer vacation—it’s paradise for high schoolers. Whether you want to lounge around at home, throw yourself into a part-time job or club activities, or best of all… yes, it’s the season where rom-com events are packed tighter than a rush-hour train.
Heading to a location different from the usual, the protagonist catches a glimpse of an unexpected side of the heroines. The distance between hearts begins to close… That’s the kind of bittersweet youth I live to observe.
And as expected, our “Ultra-Protagonist” Sakakibara and the rom-com harem squad immediately started huddled up to discuss summer plans. Perhaps previous efforts at building rapport have paid off, because I successfully managed to wiggle into the group. Just wait… I’m going to observe every single detail without missing a beat.
The schedule decided on today is as follows:
- Swimming at the beach
- A test of courage
- The summer festival
It’s a massive lineup of the “standard” summer events. For the beach trip, it turns out Shironami Dorothy—one half of the “Twin Castles,” specifically the blonde one—has a relative who runs a hotel. We’ve booked rooms for a three-day, two-night trip to a seaside hotel. Rich people are incredible.
The members going to the beach are: Sakakibara, Takashiro, Shironami, Umihara, Sasaki, and myself—the usual suspects. Plus, Amagiri, who was brilliantly (?) promoted to “heroine” status during the sports festival. And, having caught wind of the plan from who-knows-where, Sakakibara’s older sister will be joining as a chaperone. Well, of course. There’s no way the “Yandere Archetype (?)” sister was going to let this slip by. Rest in peace, Sakakibara…
Shopping for beach gear is also on the books, so it looks like summer won’t be boring at all. Sakakibara, just wait—I will absolutely turn you into the Harem King.
After getting home, I received a rare message from Ryuchi. There’s a request to meet up and talk in person. I didn’t have any reason to say no, so I agreed. The meeting will likely happen within the next few days, so I’m actually looking forward to it.
I don’t have many friends from before high school. In middle school, I was pretty much always with Ryuchi, and even further back, I used to play with a beautiful (important!) childhood friend named Sora-chan. Ryuchi is easy to see anytime, but as for Sora-chan, I can’t even remember her full name. We played together from kindergarten until about third grade, but then I had to transfer schools. There was no way to stay in touch, so it’s been silence ever since. I wonder what that friend is doing now? Well, Sora-chan was a beauty, so I’m sure everything is going just fine.
D-Month, Day △
There are plenty of things to look forward to, but today is the first day of summer vacation. Having made plans to meet Ryuchi, I headed out.
Arriving at the cafe ten minutes before the meeting time, I found Ryuchi already there, legs crossed, elegantly sipping coffee. With that face and those looks, the scene was incredibly picture-perfect.
We talked properly for the first time in a while. Ryuchi is a friend from most of my middle school years. Even back then, that mysterious aura and look made Ryuchi popular. If I recall correctly, I was the one who first reached out. At the time, I was obsessed with detective-themed rom-coms, and since Ryuchi looked exactly like one of the characters, I thought it’d be interesting and gave a shout. Ryuchi was often alone, so approaching wasn’t actually that difficult.
Nowadays, Ryuchi is a “Prince-type” who speaks in a suave, affected tone, but back then, Ryuchi might not have been good with people; the person I knew was quiet and often had a dark expression. As I kept hanging around, Ryuchi gradually turned into the person seen today. I’m not sure if there was a specific trigger, but things certainly became more interesting.
Since we went to different high schools, Ryuchi seemed busy with one thing or another, so most contact was via SNS. It seems things have finally settled down, which is why the proposal to meet came from Ryuchi’s side.
We talked about various things, but the opening move was a flick to my forehead. I don’t get it. Apparently, the reasoning was:
“Since you moved out to live on your own without saying a word to me. I think I have the right to do at least this much, don’t you?”
…I still don’t get it. I mean, sure, I probably should have mentioned going to a different high school… but Ryuchi was the one who seemed so busy during our third year of middle school that we barely met, so it couldn’t be helped…
After that, since Ryuchi wanted to hear my story, I gave a passionate lecture on all the “rom-com events” I’ve been observing. Since Ryuchi knows about this love for the genre, my friend listened intently, even while giving the occasional wry smile. The final impression was…
“You’re the same as always, I suppose…”
The tone was one of exasperation. I’m not entirely sure what “the same as always” meant, but since I got to talk to my heart’s content, I’ll call it a win.
Ryuchi also seemed oddly interested in hearing about the Student Council President, Umihara, and Amagiri. I wonder if something caught that person’s eye during the recent sports festival.
Afterwards, Ryuchi wanted to see my place, so I invited my friend over. We played games and had a relaxing time. Perhaps because of staying up late watching rom-com anime the night before, I ended up dozing off for a bit, but overall, it was a fun day.
Also, after hearing about the summer plans, Ryuchi ended up joining the beach trip, the test of courage, and the summer festival. Apparently, at some point (probably while I was asleep), Ryuchi snatched my phone and negotiated with Sakakibara and the others. As expected, a person who never misses an opening.

D-Month, Day □
Today was the shopping day for the beach trip. Since a BBQ is planned, we needed to prepare, and some of the group needed to buy swimsuits. I was one of them. The whole group going to the beach (Ryuchi came too; Sakakibara’s sister was at work) headed to the shopping mall.
Now, when thinking of a rom-com beach trip, that comes to mind—the event where the protagonist ends up choosing swimsuits for the heroines while blushing furiously. The swimsuit event is a pretty classic staple, isn’t it?
As the most “childhood-friend-like” protagonist, our Sakakibara was, as expected, dragged into the girls’ swimsuit selection. I wasn’t about to miss this. I picked out a swimsuit quickly and erased my presence to observe.
First, Takashiro attacked Sakakibara with a white triangle bikini that contrasted perfectly with natural black hair. Sakakibara was on the verge of a knockout, blushing while muttering that it suited her. I thought the match was decided, but it wasn’t over. To add a finishing blow to the already-at-the-limit Sakakibara, Shironami donned a passionate red halter-neck swimsuit. Combined with that blonde hair, the look was even more dazzling, turning Sakakibara into a complete boiled octopus.
Just when it seemed like it couldn’t get any better, the “Headliner” appeared: Amagiri. Amagiri is… the type that looks slimmer in clothes than in reality. Even though it was a one-piece swimsuit with low exposure, the “armor” on that chest was of a terrifying magnitude. Everyone there took a sharp breath. Come to think of it, I once carried Amagiri on my back… now the mystery behind that wonderful sensation has been solved… In the end, it was no longer a matter of “choosing,” and she apparently just bought the first one tried on.
Umihara, who was in the “not buying a swimsuit” group, seemed to have hit it off with Ryuchi; the two were seen chatting quite a bit. I thought to myself that girls really do make friends fast.
After the observation of Sakakibara was over, we decided to get lunch. Since we were a large group, we split into two tables at a family restaurant. With eight people, we split four and four. After a round of Rock-Paper-Scissors, the groups were: me, Sakakibara, Amagiri, and Ryuchi. The other group was Sasaki, Takashiro, Shironami, and Umihara. It was a bit of an odd split, but I felt it was a perfect chance to see the distance between Sakakibara and Amagiri, so I jumped into action.
